Title: Towards a technology assessment toolbox
Session: Monday 5 October, 16:15

Abstract

Risk Analysis and Technology Assessment (RATA) is an important aspect in NanoNextNL and has the goal to increase the awareness of PhD students for other perceptions on the own research, including commercialization and societal embedding. How RATA can be integrated to practices 'on the workfloor' however remains a challenge. In this project, we develop tools which assist (junior) scientists to decide which technology assessment methods they can apply to their research project. The toolbox provides a general overview, description and categorization of various methods for considering the societal context of research and technology projects. The compilation of this toolbox is drawing from lessons learned from earlier and ongoing projects in the frame of NanoNextNL and its predecessor NanoNed. These cases have already served as inspiration for other PhD students demonstrating the relevance and feasibility of such assessment activities. We conclude with suggestions how to embed these tools on the workfloor.
